Some of the science "experiments" we have done in the last couple of weeks included:
1. Cutting up some celery stalks and place them in water tinted with blue food coloring and watch what happens in 24 hours. This project was about learning how the stems transport water through to the plant. Answer questions and draw your results.
2. Place a plant in a cup of water, and for the next five days measure the water level. First, guess what will happen to the water, and in five days, see if your guess is right. Answer questions and draw your results.
3. Make leaf rubbings, and sort leaves based on characteristics of the leaf.
4. And this week we will observe how a seed turns into a plant. I got some pumpkin seeds at the store to do this activity.
In addition to the above science experiments from our science manual, we are also doing activities from our "Science in a nutshell" boxes. It is so cool! Our box is called "Bubble Science" It comes with an activity guide, and activity journal for the kids, and all of the items needed for 2 kids to do 12 activities. So far they have done 2 activities. The first activity with the bubbles taught us about surface tension- what floated and what broke the surface tension of the bubbles when it sank- using water and then bubble solution in basins- then placing items in the basins to see if they float or sink. Today's experiment taught us about buoyancy, and the weight of air vs. water using inflated balloons on straws inserted into a glass of water. The kids have to also draw out their experiment and answer key questions.

That's pretty neat! Does the curriculum cover the different age ranges with your kids? And do you still get to do the picnic-type stuff with the new charter group? (The Hokey-Pokey video clip from last year was just too cute!)
The science curriculum is for K-6th grade I think. The particular bubbles box is for 2nd grade. But I just tailor it for their understanding. The curriculum for the science book and experiments is for 1st grade. Dillon- even though he is in K keeps up well. So I dont do different books/curriculum at this stage/age.
This charter school also has field trips and get togethers as well. So we won't be missing out.
